A Tribute to the Koto Music of Tadao Sawai and Katsuko Chikushi

   Location: Orinda Library,

   Time:  6:30 PM - 7:30 PM

   Free admission

Content: Bay Area koto artists Shirley Kazuyo Muramoto Wong and Brian Mitsuhiro Wong will be performing koto music composed by the headmasters of their respective koto schools, the Chikushi Kai and the Sawai Soukyokuin.  Sawai and Chikushi were both classically trained, and had a connection to the famed koto genius, Michio Miyagi.  Sawai was a student of Miyagi Sensei, and Chikushi worked with Miyagi Sensei in writing down many of his compositions because Miyagi was blind.  The influence of Michio Miyagi, traditional Japanese music, and Western music influenced the music of Sawai and Chikushi.  The son and mother team of Brian Mitsuhiro Wong and Shirley Kazuyo Muramoto Wong will perform and talk briefly about the pieces.
